Sugar + Grain Story

My Inspiration

My obsession with baking began a long time ago. When I was young, I spent a lot of time with my grandparents. My brother and I loved it. Grandma and Grandpa. Mo and Pa. We knew the day would consist of walks to the park, building forts, playing dominoes, swinging in the backyard, swimming in the pool and my favorite, helping in the kitchen.

It started with a chocolate cake. The “Mo Cake” is what we call it now. It’s a humble, old-fashioned yellow cake with a rich fudge frosting that streams through all three layers. It’s the cake we all want for our birthday long after Mo’s legacy. That fudgey frosting is a wonder in itself and has taken many times to get somewhat right. Mo had the magic touch.

As I grew older and expanded my knowledge of baking, I learned to love a classic cookie. Unlike a layer cake, a cookie is approachable, wholesome, and easily customizable. In a world of store-bought cookies and mug cakes, I have a deep appreciation for the extra time spent to create something homemade. Everything Mo made was done with so much love and craftsmanship. I always wanted to be just like her. My impatient self slowly learned to be soothed by the hours in the kitchen and love baking long after my time standing on a stool next to Mo had passed.

When I began to work long and late hours, I realized that it was hard to fit my hobbies into a busy schedule. Heck, it’s hard to eat three meals a day and remember to drink water. I missed baking and realized I would have to give myself an excuse to bake if I was going to actually follow through with it. About a year ago, I committed to baking a dessert for all of my coworkers’ birthdays. I would bake them whatever they wanted. And so the baking began and never stopped…

I may never be the strong, successful homemaker and matriarch my grandma was, but I am proud to carry on her love for some good old-fashioned baked goods.
